Internationally celebrated New Zealand chef Nic Watt has brought contemporary Japanese dining to Federal Street’s dining precinct. An impressive open charcoal-grill, surrounded by a thick-slab marble counter, all housed in a majestic curved dining room ensures this dining experience is one that lingers in the memory long after leaving. Robata ‘fireside cooking’ is a Japanese style of grilling that uses binchotan, premium charcoal that doesn’t produce smoke, to create mouth-watering, full-flavoured dishes. It’s all about retaining the natural flavours in each morsel.
Try the baby chicken with shichimi pepper, ginger and barley, the king salmon tataki with karashi miso and lime soy, or the tasting menu for a little of everything. Dishes are small and designed to be shared. All wines are proudly native to New Zealand, and there are over 40 different brands of sake to complement the wide range of dishes available.
